POLA’S DEAL
Author May Charge \ £IO,OOO for his Play G.B.S. AND “CLEOPATRA” | It is not long ago since Poia i Negri, during her visit to London, j announced she had persuaded George Bernard Shaw to allow the j filming of his play, “Caesar and Cleopatra/' But no question of money was raised at that delightful luncheon i chat. Now it appears that Shaw may demand a huge sum by way of royalties. “Would they still have parted with such mutual bouquet-throwing had this been known?” asks a writer in “Film Weekly.” Well, perhaps. It is well known that Pola Negri in private lifi Princess Medvani has amassed tbi riches of a verit able Croesus dur ing her speotacu lar career he: sole personal in dulgence being i large selection o beautiful neck laces. Since that famouc which Bernard Shaw enlightened Sam Goldwyn to the effect that authors : are sometimes financial experts, : whereas film producers are merely indifferent “artists,” it is rumoured ' that the great man’s principle price is Ten Thousand Pounds! Pola Negri must have known this, ! but she batted never an eyelash. She . is a lady of spectacular courage and . a singular lacking of eye-black! : Having given Hollywood the “once over,” and “turned it down” surprisi ingly “flat,” Pola Negri announces i several facts of considerable interest. Owing to her attractive but extremely broken English, she has no ■ opinion of “talkies” as an entertaini ment. They are a faulty novelty with no commercial value whatever. She , has resolved, sweetly but firmly, to - confine her very obvious talents to ■ the more artistic silent drama, making about two “super pictures” yearly.
