N.Z.L.T.A. TO DECIDE
CANTERBURY’S TENNIS CHALLENGE WELLINGTON’S OBJECTIONS (Special to THE SUAJ WELLINGTON. To-day. Holding that Canterbury’s clprllcng** for the Hunneley Casket is not in order, the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association has submitted the question to the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. Wellington received Canterbury’s written challenge on March 13, and draws attention to the rule governing Wilding Shield contests, which also applies to casket matches, and states that a challenge must be in the hands of the defending association 21 clear days before the date fixed for the match
Canterbury failed to give this notice and the tennis year ends on March 3i. The Wellington Association objects that because of the lateness of the challenge, it cannot vary the date seven days each way as is its right It also contends that a telegram, which the Canterbury Association sent announcing its intention to challenge is not a challenge, because it does not state a dato for the contest.
The Wellington Association’s objection appears to be due to the fact that its Easter tourney is timed to begin on March 29 and to continue until April 2. and that it finds it difficult to get a team together.
