Fighting Finish
UNIVERSITY AND PARNELL Senior A.C.A. Games
AXECK.-AND-NJ2CK game between University and Parnell was provided in tlie Auckland Cricket Association’s senior A grade competition at Eden Park last Saturday, and when the match is continued to-morrow there is every prospect of a fighting finish to the game.
Lust week, Parnell batted first and scored 12 4 against the fine bowling of Matlieson. The students in their turn did little better and at stumps had only 101 on for the loss of seven wickets. A great deal now depends on what the Varsity tail can do before Parnell goes to the wicket again. McDougall, Browne and Matheson are stili to come, and they may succeed in passing tlieir opponents’ 124. The side which leads on the lirst innings will be more or less safe, for if batting conditions are more favourable than they evidently were last Saturday, either side might be able to block the other getting a four-pointer. It is exceedingly unlikely that Parnell could be got rid of again for the meagretotal they ran up on last Saturday, and the same can be said of University. GRAFTON ENTRENCHED Thanks chiefly to a line opening effort by James Langridge, and good scores by llorspool and Allcott. Grafton has 399 on for eight wickets against Ponsonby on Eden Park No. 2. To-morrow afternoon will probably be a trial for the Ponsonby batsmen, and unless they shape somewhat better than they did against Eden in the match. Grafton will have little trouble in scoring a win. Monteith. McLeod,-Snedden. Smith. Taylor and Guiney are a formidable bunch of batsmen on paper anyway, and can be relied upon to make a big effort under normal conditions. Eden is having somewhat the better of its match with United Suburbs on No. 3 wicket, the suburban men having just topped the second century in their first innings. Eden should be able to
score a four-pointer. especially as Mills and G. L. Weir are still batting. Y.M.C.A. ran up 222 against North Shore at Devonport last Saturday, slumping badly after tlie dismissal of Bowley, Elliott and Lyon. Although the game promises to be close, the odds are on Shore to get there.
