QUAIL FOR AUCKLAND
COMING FROM INDIA The Auckland Acclimatisation Society has received a report from Mr. A. R. Hughes, of Bombay, on the question of shipping snipe from India and Ceylon to New Zealand. “I have spent a considerable amount of time attempting to devise some means of successfully trapping snipe,” Mr. Hughes said. “So far tho results aro extremely disappointing, owing to the delicacy of the birds. In Ceylon we attempted to drag net them, but this was a fiasco, because it had to be carried on at night, knee deep iu mud, and under appalling conditions.” Mr. Hughes advised that a number of quail and partridges would be forwarded. to Auckland as early as possible.
The society decided to write thanking Mr. Hughes for his efforts.
