GRAND AND LYRIC
“THE PATRIOT” Great figures of Russian history have emerged from the shadow, to relive upon the screen, and these have been re-enacted; events which once rocked Europe. Revivified by Emil .Tannings’s starring picture, “The Patriot,” which Ernst Lubitch directed, such mighty names as Czar Paul the First, Count Pahlen, Mile. Lapoukhine, and the Countess Ostermunn, forgotten for a century, are brought out in all their glory at the Lyric and Grand Theatres this week. Jannings himself portrays the Czar Paul, the Emperor who lived in such constant fear of his subjects that he built a fortress-palace to keep himself safe. Florence Vidor is cast in the role of the Countess Ostermann; Lewis Stone plays Count Pahlen, the man who fostered the conspiracy which led to the assassination of Paul; Vera A r oronina portrays Mile. Lapoukhine, the Czar’s favourite.
A second attraction will bo provided at both theatres in “Prep and Pep,” a comedy-drama of youth and the making of men at a famous military school.
