TO PROTECT WOMEN
SOCIETY’S MANY REMITS Press Association WELLINGTON, Thursday. A conference of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held to-day. Delegates from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin were present. Among the remits passed were ones urging more prompt dealing with defaulting persons, the establishment of Courts of Domestic Relations, as in Canada; that women should be able to obtain a share of their husband’s earnings, in necessary cases, by allotment, if no other means were available; the placing, if necessary, of children without convictions, and between the ages of 17 and 21, under a probtaion officer: that the age of marriage be raised to 16; that the public be excluded from the hearing of maintenance cases; that convicted persons be examined psychologically before conviction; that women police be appointed; and that a widow's pension be not reduced as she earns more, so making the lives of her and her children ones of continual hardship. The conference will meet again next year.
