CHASE AFTER THIEF
POCKETS FULL OF BULBS GARDENER FINED £2 After hiring a cab and pursuing his quarry, who was in an Onehunga tram, a Newmarket constable found the man to have his pockets stuffed with bulbs that he had stolen from a shop on Broadway yesterday afternoon. This morning at the Police Court, Alfred Beattie, a gardener, aged 34, was charged with stealing bulbs and plants valued at £2 4s 5d from Charles A. Bing. Beattie decided not to plead as he could remember nothing of the incident. He explained that he was drunk at the time.
The constable said that he had noticed a man leave Mr. Bing's shop and sprint for an Onehunga tram. Mr. Bing had then complained of the theft and witness succeeded in catching the man, who had three pockets stuffed with bulbs. Beattie was under the influence of liquor but by no means drunk. There was nothing known against him. In tho opinion of Senior-Sergeant O’Grady the theft was p’-o.nh.'y premeditated as the man had been hanging about the shop walking up and down for about two bom's. Beattie was fined £3, with costs 14s, in default one month.
