BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Birkenhead Borough Council held i its fortnightly meeting last evening. Mr. ; A. ITadfield, Deputy-Mayor, presiding. L „ The waterworks engineer reported that the laying of the four-inch mains was ' completed in all the roads specified in the contract, and. all properties are connected with the new mains in Hangatira Road, Kiwi Road, Victoria Road West, and Vermont Road. On the IP2S watei - I works loan of £5.230 a credit balance t was shown of £1,730. It was decided to put in a four-inch main in Beach Road, instead of the twoinch, at a cost of £bos: also to extend. ' the four-inch main to Beach Haven. Permission was granted to screen pic- • tures in the Foresters’ Hall on Good Frit day. The Local Government Loans Board gave its consent for the proposed sewerage loan of £47,000. ’ The Deputy-Mayor said it was \»-iy ■ disappointing for the Loans Board to cut » out the £3,000 for the first year’s inter- - est. The same tiling occurred in the - recent water loan. It meant that a rate would have to be struck on the first year's rates to meet this interest.

Air. F. E Powell, the engineer, stated that it was unusual for the board to cut out the first year's interest. Discussion took place on the question, also on the question of large areas of properties in the drainage area, where owners would derive no benefit. It was left to the Deputy-Mayor, the town clerk, and Air. Rowell to go into, and if necessary tci obtain legal advice.

The town clerk submitted a balance sheet which showed the borough to be in a very satisfactory position. The Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, Minister of Health, enclosed a copy of a letter addressed by him to the chairman of the Xorth Shore Water Board regarding the water supply from Lake Pupuke, and asked if the council proposed to co-

operate with the board in arriving at a satisfactory solution of the difficulty in connection with the kind owners in tho vicinity of the lake. It was decided to discuss the matter with the Marin# Bodies’ Association at a conference.
