MAORI BISHOP’S VISIT
WELCOME AT HAMILTON NATIVES REJOINING CHURCH (From. Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Wednesday. The Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa, was given a warm welcome by the Waikato Diocesan Synod this evening. Bishop Cherrington said the Waikato diocese could congratulate itself on the efforts made to improve tin* conditions of the Maori clergy. The relations between the pakelia and Maori clergy in the diocese were most cordial. As yet there were no Maori churches in the diocese, but with the help, sympathy and advice of Bishop Bennett he hoped to see a Maori church.
Bishop Bennett said he was touring ! the country with a view to meeting as many Maoris as possible. There was . a tremendous number of sects among the Maoris, but no matter what tic religion of the people he had met they had very cordially welcomed him. Many of them had decided to return to tic ! Church of England, to which they had ; previously belonged. Rev. Mr. Harawera welcomed Bishop ' Bennett on behalf of the Maori clergy of the Waikato diocese. He expressed appreciation of the keen interest Bishop Cherrington had taken in tinwork of the Maori clergy and of his action in raising their stipends.
