NEW NAVAL PARLEY
FIVE-POWER CONFERENCE NATIONS WELCOME SCHEME (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11 a.m. PARIS, Wednesday. The paper "Echo de Paris” -cays M. Briand (France) and Sir Austen Chamberlain (Britain) have come to an understanding to hold a naval conference in June, at which the five principal naval Powers will be represented. Reed. 11.40 a.m. GENEVA. Wed. It is suggested here that the new naval conference is the outcome of a hint from the April meeting of the League’s Preparatory Commission, that until the naval Powers reach an agreement, the whole of the League’s disarmament hopes will be frustrated. The alternatives are a new naval conference or remission of the problem to a special sub-committee of the League’s Commission. Reed. 9 a.m. TOKYO, Wednesday. Naval authorities welcome the reported agreement between Sir Austen Chamberlain and M. Briand in reference to the five Power conference, but they are of opinion that an essential preliminary is to secure an understanding or agreement with America.
