AIR BASE NECESSARY
PROVISION AT SINGAPORE LINK IN EMPIRE CHAIN British Official Wireless Reed. 11.30 a.m. RUGBY, Tuesday. In the House of Commons to-day the Air Estimates were discussed in committee. Regarding the expenditure of £576,000 oil an air station at Singapore, of which amount £IOO,OOO is to be spent this year, the Secretary for Air, Sir Samuel Hoare, said that it was part of the general expenditure on the Singapore Base. The air side was a necessary side j of the base, and the provision they I were making was on a moderate j scale. There was no airdrome at present suitable for any air squadrons. The Air Force would serve a double purpose. It would not only be a part of the naval base, capable of performing any air operations of the naval base if called upon, but would be an important air station in the Far Fast. Hven if there were no naval base at Singapore, an air base would be necessary, as it was a cardinal point in our air communications.
