KING COUNTRY NEWS RETICULATION WORK. At a special general meeting of the Ohura Tennis Club Kir. D. KlcKay was appointed club captain, and Dr. It. B. Turnbull vice-captain. These gentlemen will have charge of affairs on club days at the courts. Carroll, and Commissioners Pearson, Klaud and Beautrais, to deal with electrical matters, the work of reticulating the town district being now under way. The contractors, Messrs. Turnbull and Jones, advised that a shipment of hardwood poles due to the board had been washed away and lost by the recent floods in Australia, but that it had been possible to make other arrangements.
Reporting on the month's work, the Highways Board states that a considerable amount of new work has been undertaken in the King Country. This includes lengthy portions of the Te Kuiti-Bulls via Taumarunui Main Highway, which is now approaching the day when it can be regarded as an all-w*eather route for motorists. Already a regular taxi service has been started between Te Kuiti and Taumarunui, and the road is reported as being quite good for the time of the year, though necessarily a tit rough in parts. At the monthly meeting of the Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce Messrs. C. A. Boles and A. J. Langmuir were appointed to represent that body on the executive of the Shopping Week movement. It was resolved to support the proposed repeal of sub-section 2 of section 64 of The Rural Intermediate Credit Act, which at present empowers any company to guarantee repayment of loans granted under the Act. The chamber is calling a meeting of deferred licence landholders to discuss the question of freeholding values in the town, which have been proved as ruling too high. WAIUKU TOWN BOARD The Waiuku Town Board met on Monday night, the chairman, Mr. J. J. A. James, presiding. Mr. C. Buttimore reported that he and the chairman had met the Main Highways Board at Pukekohe and had asked that Queen Street from the National Bank to the boundary should be made a main highway. Mr. Ward reported that he had let the contract for the repairing of the concrete retaining wall at the landspit to Mr. Farrelly, who was also doing the painting of the dressing-sheds.
The Valuation Department wrote asking that in view of an assessment court being required, an assessor should be appointed by the board. Mr. A. M. Barriball was appointed assessor subject to his agreeing to act. A plan of a subdivision of Kirs. C. Rossiter’s property was submitted for approval, but as the area of the section was not in accordance with the by-law the plan was referred back to the solicitors.
It was resolved to roll Campbell, Kaiwaka and View Roads, also France Street and a portion of Victoria Avenue and such other roads the works committee considered necessary, the same to be blinded with pumice sand. The board decided to begin the dressing on Kitchener Road as soon as the necessary material was on hand.

The engineer gave the following fig. ures as to present maintenance costs and the cost on the basis of a subsidy of £4 for £l, and £3 for £i. At the £4 for £1 basis the council would have to pay a little more than at pres, ent. At a cost of £225 a mile the council now contributed £75. A loan to spend £ 4,000 a mile for permanent work would cost £BO for interest Added to this was a third of £BO i mile for maintenance, and this gave KVaipa’s annual cost a mile of £lO6 13s 4d. If the subsidy was £4 for £l. Waipa’s figures would be £64 and £26 13s 4d more than the present maintenance cost.
