SOCCER IN AUCKLAND
PAST YEAR REVIEWED A continued increase in the number of players is shown in the annual report of tho Auckland Football Association* Consequently there has also been a further increase in the number of teams, there being 1-10 teams in the various competitions last year, as against 130 in the previous season. This increase demanded more grounds, but as it was impossible to obtain these near the city increased travelling was involved
The Thistle Club trouble is not further commented on, the management tendering thanks to Dr. Neil McDougall and his associates on the business men’s committee which had found an amicable settlement of the dispute. Owing to a decline in gate takings tho financial position is not altogether satisfactory, but confidence is expressed in a complete recovery during tho coming season, which promises to bo a record one. The insurance scheme which was inaugurated last season proved of great benefit to players*. and relief was given in many eases where rather serious accidents occurred.
Thanks are tendered to Mr. P. Neesham, sole selector, for his work in connection with the Auckland representative team, the quality of which was reflected in the success attained in the English Football Association trophy competition.
Tho success of the various local competitions and the Chatham Cup fixtures and the victory of the Auckland primary schoolboys’ representative team in the North Island primary schools’ tournament held at Huntly, are also commented upon.
