BOXING WITHOUT PERMIT

PROLOGUE TO PICTURE THEATRE MANAGER IN COURT (Special to THE SUN) WAIHI, Tuesday. When George Martinengo staged a boxing exhibition betwen two brothers as a prelude to a boxing picture in the Academy Theatre, of which he is the proprietor, he failed to procure a per* mit from an inspector of police. This morning he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court to explain his reasons for failing to get a permit. Sergeant Calwell said that he had seen an advertisement of the bout and had called on defendant to warn him that, as he hc.d not got a permit, it would be a breach of the regulations. Nevertheless, the bout, in which the boxers were aged .35 and 17, was helm Martinengo argued that the bout had only been a prologue to the picture. There was no prize money or trophy offered and it had never been intended that the boys should box seriously. 1* such things were not allowed, he one might just as well shut all theatres. Sergeant Calwell said he would not press for a penalty. Such bouts, ho** ever, were not advisable as the bo>s were not medically examined before* hand, as was done before a proper., authorised bout. Mr. F. W. Platts. S.M.. agreed tna* the case was not a serious ore. ■ would be, however, if the breach repeated. He ordered defendant pay costs.
