TARIFF ON WHEAT

NO REACTION THIS SEASON DUTIES CONSIDERED TOO HIGH Press Association WELLINGTON, Monday. The Cabinet decided to-day not to alter for the present season the existing wheat and flour duties, which are on a sliding scale, but to have a full examination before next season’s operations of the questions in a reduction in the duties on wheat and flour and the guarantee of prices to the growers. In making this announcement, the Prime Minister said the general opinion of the Government was that reasonable protection for the wheat and flour interests in the country was most desirable, but that at present the duties upon both wheat and Hour and the guarantee price were too high. The Government was anxious to ensure that in the arrangements made for the year following the present season it did all in its power to prevent the country having to rely upon an external supply of those important commodities.
