Beat Two Records
ARNE BORG’S SUPERIORITY Cameron Fails to Reach Time ARNE BOKO, the Swedish world s champion swimmer, beat by one-fifth of a second the New Zealand record time of •jo 4-5 s for 100 yards in the Auckland Swimming Centre's carnival at the Tepid Baths last evening. Then again, in a handicap race, Borg beat the New Zealand time for the quarter-mile, but his performance did not approach his Australian times. Borg impressed Auckland with his ability—and as a showman.
Borg's boyishness prevented 1 his antics before the crowd of | 1.200 from savouring of blatant showmanship. j After his two big swims he gave a demonstration in which cross-talk played no small part. Barg had his audience. He combined his cleverness in the water with a variety of small j talk. His performance was amusing, | and the crowd accepted Borg’s confidence in his ability good humouredly. . Many wanted more of Borg’s comment in broken English with a decided American tinge. 1 So Borg was assured of popularityAt the end of the programme he played in a water-polo game. and. of the seven goals scared, six were to his credit. It was Borg’s game right through, and he played easily the best polo Auckland has seen. He commandeered the game. CAMERON’S EFFORT For two lengths in the 100yds. Billy Cameron, of Wellington, New Zealand 18-year old champion, raced Borg stroke for stroke, <but Borg hit out abruptly at the beginning of the last lap and obviously caught Cameron napping. The Wellingtonian was soon on Borg's heels after his first surprise, and, amid tremendous enthusiasm, was only four feet back at the end. Borg’s time was 55 3-ss, but Cameron’s time, 5G 3-ss, was surprisingly slower than his own New Zealand record. Because of this the race was rather a disappointment. Cameron has proved himself able to go nearly a second faster than he did last evening. Borg, too, has been credited with covering 100yds in 535. In spite of the unexpectedly slow times the race was grimly fought. Borg’s crisp, unorthodox action contrasted with Cameron’s sweeping strokes.
Borg’s best Australian time for the quarter-mile was 4m 5Ss, but last evening his time was 5m 7 2-ss—l7s better than David Lindsay’s New Zealand record. Borg was not exteuded, and the crowd had an excellent opportunity of studying his tremendous body swing at the turns over a 13-lap course. Gordon Bridson, of Grammar Club, had a start of 18s on Borg, but the Swede was up with him at the 12th fap, and went on unhurriedly to finish the course four yards ahead of the Aucklander. SUPERIOR IN 440 This was the swim which attracted the crowd’s attention to Borg’s style. Borg gave substantial starts, but he outclassed the opposition and judged the race excellently. Other events on the programme were interesting, and the most exciting tussle was the light for thirii place in the women’s 66 2-3yds between Miss P. Robertson and Miss E. Stockley, both off scratch. Miss Stockley just got ahead by a touch. The Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, welcomed Borg officially, and the Mayoress, Mrs. A. D. Campbell, presented a bouquet to Mrs. Borg. Representatives, of sports bodies were present. Results: Women’s Handicap, 66 2-3yds. First heat: Miss D. Grant, 2s, 1; Miss P. Robertson, scr, 2. Time, 42 l-ss. Second heat: Miss M. Arne Borg (Sweden) 1 T. W. Cameron (Wellington), .. - J. P. Farrell (Waitemata) 3 Time, 55 3-ss, a New Zealand record. Cameron’s take-off was more cleancut than Borg’s, but the two were swimming stroke for stroke over the openinglap. Farrell and R. de Loree of Mount Kden, the other contestants, were beaten on the first lap. Borg and Cameron touched together, but the Wellingtonian shot ahead briefly half-way down the baths. Borg was with him again at the end of the lap and, making a magnificent turn, immediately took the lead. Halfway on the last lap his lead was definite, but Cameron carne up with a big spurt only to be shut out by four feet, a second behind Borg. Farrell and de Loree were well back. 440 Y DS. FIRST-CLASS HANDICAP World’s record, 4m 525, J. Weismuller; New Zealand record, 5m 24 2-ss, D. P. Lindsay. Arne Borg (Sweden), -scr 1 G. Bridson (Grammar) 18s L J. By the time Borg had taken the water De Loree and Enwright weie one and a-hali lengths in the lead and Bridson one length. The Swede
swam precisely and deliberately after a fast first lap. In 100 yards he gained a-quarter of a length on the Aucklanders, and covered the distance in 60s. Emvright and De Loree were two yards ahead of Bridson at tire fifth lap, and liorg was half a length ha zk, moving briskly. After the fifth lap, on which lie picked up, his lap times slackened. Borg took 2m 9s to cover 2)0 yards. On the eighth lap, Bridson was five feet ahead of De Loree and Enwright, who were a third of a length in front of the visitor. At this stage Borg was contenting himself with a deliberate pace. His time at 300 yards was 3m 20s. The 11th lap saw Bridson only three yards ahead of Borg and Enwright, and Borg caught up two yards or. Bridson on the next. The last lap saw Bridson and Borg together, but the champion made a remarkable turn and sprinted to the rope three yards ahead of Bridson. Enwright was 20 yards back.
