WEEK-END FIRES
TWO HOUSES DAMAGED During the week-end two houses in the suburbs, one of them unoccupied, were damaged by tire. About 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon an empty house in TV apiti Avenue, One Tree Hill, owned by Mr. D. R. Brandell, of Awatea Road, Parnell, caught lire and by the time the Remuera Fire Brigade had been notified the flames had a good hold on one room. The brigade made a good save, so that only one room and a passage were damaged. The house was insured in the Alliance Office for £1,200. On Saturday evening a four-roomed house in Byron Avenue, owned by Mr. Robinson and occupied by Mr. Calder, had two rooms gutted by fire. The flames had a good hold when the brigade arrived, and it did good work in saving the rest of the house. Yesterday afternoon a cable fused under the pavement at the corner of Queen Street and Fort Street. The City Brigade turned out and extinguished the fire, little damage being done.
