NORTHERN HERD TESTING ffrom Our Own Correspondent) KAIKOHE, Friday. The Bay of Islands Herd Testing Association results of testing for the month of February are as follow: No. 1 Group (Ohaeawai, Pakaraka, Remuera Estate and Waimate North) Group average, 1,295 cows; 5421 b milk; 4.6 test; 25.5 S fat. Highest herd, 57 cows, 7311 b milk, 5.0 test, 36.78 fat. Lowest herd, 29 cows, 3061 b milk, 4.3 test, 13.41 fat. No. 2 Group (Kaikohe, Okaihau and Waihau Valley)—Group average, 995 cows; 5401 b milk; 4.7 test; 25.4 S fat. Highest herd, 23 cows, S2Slb milk, 3.9 test, 32.69 fat. Lowest herd, 30 cows, 3491 b milk. 4.7 test, 16.43 fat. Association average, 2,290 cows, 5411 b milk, 4.65 test, 25.53 fat. Association average, February, 1925, 1,760 cows, 4441 b milk, 4.65 test, 20.60 fat. That herd-testing associations are of benefit to the practical farmer is shown by the increased yield a cow and extra weight of butter-fat obtained by judicious culling, as the result of last year’s operations, the first year of the existence of No. 1 group. FEILDING STOCK SALE Press Association FEILDING, Friday. Fifteen thousand sheep were yarded at to-day’s sale. Good breeding ewes sold at late rates, but failing-mouth ewes were easier. Two-tooth store ewes made 26s 9d to 44s 6d: small ewes, to 235; four-tooth ewes, to 37s 6d: four and six-tooth ewes, 26s 6d to 30s Id; five-year ewes, 20s Gd to 25s 9d. Cattle sold at late rates, there being still a good demand for dairy stock. MINING NEWS LUCKV SHOT.—The manager reports: During the past week all the air pipes have been taken out of the mine and the pass and travelling way have been completed up the rise from the low level for a distance of 60ft, leaving another 24ft to do to reach the intermediate level. This work will be finished in the early part of the coming week, and work will then be resumed on the reefs. The ventilation of the mine is now all that could be desired.
