NEWSPAPER APOLOGISES

LABOUR MEN AND THE DUCE FALSE INTERVIEW STORY (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Saturday. The “Sunday Express” publishes an apology to Messrs. Walter Citrine and Sassenbacli, in respect of its article reporting an alleged interview between them and Signor Mussolini. The paper says it learns that such an interview did not occur. It regrets that its usually reliable channel of information proved a source of error. In its issue of January 13 the “Sunday Express” said Mr. Walter Citrine, secretary of the Trades Union Congress, and Mr. Sassenbacli, secretary of the International Federation of Trades Unions, went secretly to Rome to persuade the Prime Minister, Signor Mussolini, to allow Italy to join the federation. The paper declared that they harangued Signor Mussolini for exactly 65 minutes and then he talked for exactly 65 minutes. It asserted that Signor Mussolini concluded: “You have the audacity to ask me to delegate the rule over my work-people to a handful of political fanatics in Amsterdam. You have wasted your time, but 1 do not know whose money.” Signor Mussolini then rang the bell, said the paper, the door opened, and the Labour leaders departed.
