“THIEF IN THE DARK” AT ROYAL
“A Thief in the Dark,” now at the Royal Theatre, Kingsland, has as its motif the regeneration of a handsome young circus crook, a strong love theme and the background of the circus side-show tents where a fake crystal - gazer “materialises” the “spirits” of his patrons’ departed relatives. The locale is in the sunny South, where the wagon show sets up its tents and a “mob” of circus grafters kills an eccentric jewel collector in efforts to locate a fortune in gems. During the action of the photoplay the technique of the fake spiritualist is thoroughly exposed, while “ghosts” and other apparitions eerily swish into and out of some of the most pretentious sets ever shown in a “spook” and liouse-of-mystery production. “Plastered in Paris.” the second feature, stars the inimitable Sammy Cohen as a tourist and soldier.
