THE HAT TRICK?

DEVONPORT POSSIBILITY The possibility of a player pulling off a “hat trick’’ is intriguing Devonport players. If it does happen it will be something unique in bowling annals around this city. Mr. F. J. H. Ellisdon, who has made himself 1929 champion of Devonport, is also in the championship pairs and the handicap singles. In the flrst event he and H. Bayly were to play for the final with odds in favour of Ellisdon; owing to the sickness of Mr. BaJ'ly the play-off has been postponed for some weeks, and Mr. Bayly has informed the club that he will not be able to play, and Mr. Ellisdon takes the championship. In the championship pairs, Trevithick and Hamlin, and Anderson and Andrews, each with one life, have to play, and Mr. Ellisdon is in the final. In the handicap singles with four to play, and Mr. Ellisdon having the bye, he is also in the final. He bowls a very narrow bowl and on technical points should not meet the success that he has, but apparently the amount of green taken is not the only important factor. The greens at Devonport have had very hard wear this season, and unless the finals of the more important games are got off promptly there will be a change for the worse when the rain comes on the greens, and there will be some heartburning among players.
