BRILLIANT STREPHON
KING’S PLATE VICTORY AT MELBOURNE GREENLINE SCORES EASILY (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) \ MELBOURNE, Sunday. j Tho Victoria Racing Club's autumn 1 meeting was concluded at Flemington i yesterday in fine weather, when there j was again a large attendance. The race j track was in capital order, and some j fast times were recorded. In the decision of the Gibson-Carmi-chael Stakes, CarradaTe was racing in fifth position early, but he finished in ; fine style and won comfortably, Carradale cost 2.ooogns as a yearling, and is owned by the VER.C. chairman. Mr. L. K. S. McKinnon. Black Duchess had 12 lengths* lead at the seven-furlongs post in the King's Plate, but Strephon strode along brilliantly, and disposing of the New South Wales mare, won in record time for the race. Strephon’s record to date is seven wins and one second in 10 starts, his winnings in stake money reaching to £12,107. Greenline registered a brilliant victory in the Leonard Stakes under the steadier of 9.13. With the exception of the Newmarket Handicap, the time registered by Greenline is the fastest performance recorded at Flemington in a six furlongs race. J. Pike, who steered Greenline, had a previous win in the same race with Fujisan. Jubra led at two miles in the Autumn Steeplechase, but tired toward the finish, when Flavel Light scored nicely. This gelding was originally raced in Tasmania, and was recently successfull at Warrnambool. Balmerino was eighth early, and won the Northcote Handicap in the last stride, the time being only half a second outside the Australian and New Zealand record. Balmerino was trained by the ex-New Zealander, Dave Price. Dunvard led always in the Farewell Handicap and won brilliantly. His trainer, O’Dwyer, won the final race last week with Red Sea. Scanlon rode both horses. The stake values at to-day’s meeting were as follow:—Gibson-Carmi-chael Stakes, £686; King’s Plate, £1,547; Leonard Stakes, £901; Autumn Steeplechase, £562; Northcote Handicap, £450; Farewell Handicap, £467. yet to come. The favourite repeated his tactics of Motukarara last Saturday and is evidently not a good proposition in a tight corner, pressure being a distressing experience to him so far. fin view of tli ecUisti shown by Tactless in tho New Zealand Derby, when after losing: a furlong at the start the son of Tho Triumph caught the field and finished well up, it was surprising- to see him only seventh choice in such a field. —•Abaydos.”] A Stirring Race
The Cup provided one of the best races ever seen on the Washdyke course. Author Jinks began well and paced like a gentleman throughout to establish a. course record of 4.24 2-5 for two miles, to defeat Wrackler. The Ashburton three-year-old put up a game fight, but he was no match for Author Jinks who fairly ate the opposition over the last four furlongs. On returning to scale Author Jinks was received with universal approval, pandemonium ruling for a time in recognition of a performance that has had no equal at Timaru. Maiwhariti was the only withdrawal. Wrackler was the quickest to begin, and Travis Axworthv went away fast, the order being Wrackler, Travis Axworthy. Lingfield and Golden Bubbles with a furlong covered. There was little change in the order until the last round was tackled, when Wrackler and Travis Axworthy were on racing terms, with Lingfield in behind, and Author Jinks going like a good one just on the outside of her. Across the top Travis Axworthy shot his bolt and fell out of the running. Wrackler continued in command well up the straight, but 150 yards off the post along came Author Jinks, and pacing like a champion, he cut off Wrackler by a neck, with Lingfield two lengths away third, followed by Golden Bubbles. Wrackler gave his backers a fine run for their money. He is a remarkable three-year-old to stand up to such an amount of hard racing and travelling, and then come
out and stay so well- against seasoned performers. Travis Axworthy, who was next to Wrackler in the betting, covered a lot of extra ground, but he had every chance, and did not stay as well as was anticipated. Lingfield’s effort was honest, and she was obliged to improve on her handicap two seconds for the £35 attached to third berth. Royal Serene, Avenger, Jolly Pet and Real Light spoiled any chances they had at the start. Lady Cello Highly Bred Lily Bingen (D. Withers) was all the rage for the Seadown Handicap, in which Fair Dillon, Koutoma, Monopole, Mountain Ore and Denvers Doll were scratched. Lady Cello was in the van from start to finish. She is a half-sister to Author Jinks, being by Bells Sydney Wilkes, a great horse in his day. out of Lady Jinks. The favourite was never really dangerous, and was well back at the finish. Lady Cello’s early attendants were Rafa. Le Thorpe and Nonsuit! j but Rafa broke some gear rounding ; the turn for home, and his chonoe into j the bargain. Lady Cello hung on to i heat John Noble by two lengths, with jLe Thorpe close up third. Midland’s Surprise
j Peter I.in and the Bon eta—New Metford bracket were the only strongly backed candidates in the Temuka Handicap, but they were not within range of the place-fillers at the settlement of accounts. Peter Lin is regarded as a very solid customer, but he made an awful hash of things today, breaking several times on the trip. Midland was always handy, lying third shortly after the start! fourth for the last round, and thereafter M. B. Edwards had an easy drive, bringing home the proverbial ship full of golden sovereigns for his 71 supporters. Judging by his display in this event, which was superior to his earlier effort. Midland should soon win again. Repute ran a fair race, hut St. Petrox was too good for him. and the New Brighton trained marc over the last bit. Trampcrisp started a promising run in the back lane the I last time, but broke and was never ! afterwards dangerous.
