RICH RELIC OF GREECE

SALE OF PORTLAND VASE BELONGED TO A POPE British Official Wireless Reed. 11 a.m. RUGBY, Friday. The historic vase of antique glass known as the Portland or JBarberini Vase, which is soon to be sold, was at one time in the possession of the family of Pope Barberini, or Urban VIII., and remained in the Barberini Palace until about 1766, when it was sold.

Four years later it came into the possession of the Dowager Duchess of Portland.

The vase was discovered near Ttomj? in 1582. Its age is unknown, but some experts believe it to be of Greek origin, probably dating from about 69 A.D.

In 1845 a noted visitor to the British Museum smashed the vase into 100 pieces, but the scattered fragments were assembled and refixed.
