GOT HIS JOB BACK. —At a special meeting of the Australian Seamen's Union, Jacob Johnson was reinstated as the general secretary. He has been in Kaolin connection with the recent marine cooks’ strike. BRITISH BETTING TAX. The ‘ Daily Telegraph” says it understands that it is very likely that the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. "Winston Churchill, in his Budget, will drop the betting tax, which has proved to be liable to wholesale evasion, and that he will substitute a system of graded licences for bookmakers. —A. and N.Z.
