BULBS FOR THE ROCK GARDEN

For brightening up the rock garden in the early months of the year one cannot equal some of the bulbous plants. Many of the bulbs will flower

at an earlier date than usual on a rockery, especially if they can be given snug, sunny corners. After flower- ' ing, the bulbs can often be left where ! they have bloomed to come up again | next season, and in no way will they j interfere with the other occupants of : the rock garden.

In practically all cases planting in masses is to be strongly advised. A good rule is to liave each bulb separated from its fellows by the distance of about two diameter measurements across the bulb.

When making up the bulb order some, at any rate, of the undermen tioned should be included for plant ing on the rock garden:—

Lachinalia, a dainty, spotted-leafcd dwarf-growing bulb with yellow pendulous flowers tipped yellow and green.

Scilla, or Wood Hyacinth.—ln collours of white, blue, and pink, growing nine inches high and delicately

Muscarei, or Grape Hyacinth.—A beautiful blue shade, quite hardy and multiplies quickly. This should have a pocket devoted to itself to keep all the bulbs together.

Iris Pavonia, or Peacock Iris.—A dainty mauve colour with blue blotches on each petal. F RES IA HYBRIDS.—A collection of new choice colours in yellows, purples, orange and raauves giving a charming contrast from Ine ordinary common species-
