A Buoyant Market
N.Z. Fertilisers Firming
Bv
“Noon Call.”
A BUOYANT tone is registered in the market for all the better-class securities on ’Change. The general tendency continues upward.
Fluctuations Movements shown in sales over the j past 24 hours, when compared with | the price at the time of previous rc- j ported sale include: Whittome, Stevenson, rise of Is Cd. j Kuala. Kampar Tin, fall of Id. Bycroft. Ltd., rise of 2s 3d. Dalgety and Co., rise of 3s 6d. National Insurance, rise of Id. British Tobacco, rise of 2d. The banking group is particularly j firm. Commercials show increased j strength, sales taking place in the : South at 295, compared with 28s lid in Auckland at the time of the last reported sale. This morning holders were asking 29s 2d. with steady buyers in at 295. New Zealands have not recovered from yesterday’s decline and, offered at 63s 6d, could not draw buyers beyund 635. Several insurance shares show a firmer tone. Nationals were dealt with outside the call room at 16s 4d, Id in advance of the price at the time of the previous reported sale. Buyers of South British moved up 6d, to 65s f*d. without drawing a declaration from sellers. Gas shares are meeting with a steady inquiry. Aucklands ar*- slightly easier, with sellers at 24s Sd supported by buyers at 24s sd, compared with a market at 24s 9d at the time of the last reported sale. Buyers are offering 3d more at 10s 6d, for Gisbornes. These shares undoubtedly appear some of the best buying in the group. Based on the present buying price and the latest dividend, the* return 10s 6d would be approximately £9 los 6d per cent*
A very bright tone i.s registered in the miscellaneous group. Buyers of New Zealand Farmers’ Fertilisers have advanced their offers 3d above the latest selling price without making a sale. Based on the last dividend of 6 per cent, the shares at 20s 9d would return approximately £5 15s Sd per cent. Expectations are, however, that a dividend nearer 8 per cent, will he paid out at any early date. Certainly the company should be recovering from the losses of the "manure Avar” of two years ago. It is selling a staple commodity in a field where competition is limited. The market for both issues of Sharia nd, Ltd., is very firm, and, with sellers not prepared to make a declaration. buyers advanced their offers to 20s 9d this morning. Milne and ChuVcc shares are very firm. An interim dividend at the rate of S per cent, is announced by the directors of this firm. Bycrofts. Ltd., saw their first sale yesterday afternoon since April last. TRADE IN PRODUCE POTATO MARKET FIRMER \\ I 1 LOCAL CROP FINISHED |; | ( Sun Office, 0 a.m. L Potatoes have been the main j : source of worry in grain, seed and produce circles over the week. | The supply of good quality localgrown tubers is practically exhausted, and merchants have been j; called upon to look outside for future needs. There are still fair quantities of potatoes held in Pukekohe, but the quality leaves much to be desired. The bulk of the lines sent forward to Auckland merchants over the week has not passed inspection and has been passed on to the marts, where prices are low for blight-infected tubers. Merchants’ through store quotations for good quality tubers have been advanced to around 9s 6d a cwt. during the week, with little prospect of a reduction in the near future. Fairly substantial orders have been placed in the Manawatu to cover requirements over the next three weeks on a basis of C 6 5s on rail. More attention has been paid to the Southern market over the past few days, and orders have been placed there for the new crop to commence coming forward about the last week of the present month. Poor Outlook for Onions From the growers’ point of view the position in regard to onions is very unsatisfactory with little prospect of an improvement this season. J-leavy supplies keep prices on low levels. The Aorangi next week takes a few hundred tons to the Pacific Coast of U.S.A., but the quantity will not be enough to relieve the position here. The export demand this season is well below expectations. A certain amount of inquiry continues to come from Sydney, but the market there at the moment is too low to make export profitable. In any case, Auckland growers could not compete with Canterbury. Through store, Auckland quotations for onions range up to 8s 6d a cwt. for good quality lots. Cereal Market Steady The cereal market holds practically on recent levels, with little indication of much movement in the immediate future. After a brief attempt to raise prices at the latter end of last week, Southern sellers of oats eased again to recent low levels. Through store, Auckland quotations for B Gartens are unchanged at 4s 4d a bushel. As are offered at 4s 7d. Chaff is coming forward in regular shipments to sell through store at JLI 9 IDs a ton. The maize market remains stationary with merchants continuing to draw on Poverty Bay on a basis of 5s 3d a bushel. There is little life m the market, with few signs of the hardening in price, which can be usually expected at this time of Grass and Clover Seeds Moving Freely Healthy business is being transacted in grass and clover seeds for autumn sowing. Most merchants report orders to be quite as numerous as last season. but the quantities are smaller. Manures are moving very freely, with merchants still experiencing difficulty in getting orders away promptly on the date of delivery. N.Z’S DAIRY PRODUCE RETURNS FOR SEVEN MONTHS INCREASE OF 7 PER CENT. Press Association WELLINGTON, Thursday. Returns issued by the dairy division of the Department of Agriculture, for the seven months ended February 28, show that the quantity of butter graded was 04,533 tons, an increase of 9.7 per cent, over the corresponding period of last season, and that of cheese 62,930 tons, an increase of 13.3 per cent. The total butter-fat equivalent of these quantities is 10.53 per cent, above that for the seven months of 1927-28. Following is a summary of the quantities graded in seven months of recent years:—
AUSTRALIA’S NEW LOAN A.M.P. SOCIETY TAKES £1,000,000 Evidently the optimism of the Federal Treasury, in reflation to the prospect of raising £7,000,000 in the Australian market, on an interest basis of Si per cent., has not been altogether unwarranted. Receipt of a first subscription of £1,000,000, by tl*e Australian Mutual Provident (Insurance) Society, announced by the eases materially the task "which has been set for Australian investors. The tender is regarded also as an indication of the satisfaction o£ investors with the return offered by t’ae Loan Council for the issue. Tt ha£, incidentally, the effect of supporting the action of the Treasury by refraining (from the customary plan of having the loan under-written. By that departure, costs of flotation of the loan will be lessened, and, at the same tim£, the banks, which have earned commission on previous issues by the Federal Loan Council, are deprived of that sqjnrce of income. Theme is abundance of proof that the A.M.IV Society is a strong and consistent of Australian stocks. The latest balance sheet of that organisation disclosed holding of Government stocks for nearly £22,500,000. which represented an Increase* of £3GS,OOO on the total 12 i months earlier. H.B. RiPE-ROT IN PEACHES PRICES GO DOWN Ripe-rot has affected many of the peaches coming forward on the City Markets, and to-day prices were extremely cheap. Choice varieties have been impaired in quality as well as ordinary lines. Tomatoes show an improvement in Apple sales continue to increase, and the demand is steady The markets are short of oranges, but a large shipment from California next week will alleviate the position. Large supplies of grapes from Te Kauwhata are arriving and are selling well. In the vegetable market the improvement in the values of potatoes is gradual. Inferior lines are still plentiful, but there is a good inquiry for the best offerings. At to-day’s poultry auction values increased slightly. Choice young cockerels are meeting with brisk competition, but the penning was hardly up to the average. Heavy hens and young drakes are selling well. Pullets are being penned in large numbers and birds just on laying are realising high rates.
