BATTLE WITH NATIVES NINE KILLED IN PAPUA (United l y .A.—By Telegraph—CopyrightJ Reed. 10.55 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. The recent attack by Papuan natives on a Government party appears to have been much fiercer in character than was at first reported. The Government party numbered 80. The day after its arrival at Goil ala village, the natives were seen gathering, armed with spears. A valley of arrows injured three native policemen. Fighting continued Ihroughout iiio day, with arrows flyiug in all dire< tions. On the following day an attack was made front all sides, volley after volley of spears coming from the thick scrub. The total casualties consisted of nine of the attacked who were killed by rifle fire, with an additional casualty uncertain.
