Discord Mongers
TALK TO JOURNALISTS Ch am berlain M i srepresented
(■Australian and IC.Z. Press Association Received HI a.m. LONDON, Thursday THE latest attempt to create discord in Anglo-American relations is a New York dispatch from Geneva purport ing to reveal that Sir Austen Chamberlain bad a confidential conference with British journalists during which he described the Kellogg Pact as merely an "American gesture, suitable for Americans alone.”
Further, it is stated, when asked the Pact’s effect on disarmament, Sir Austen said “They are building fifteen cruisers, aren’t they? Disarmament is not in the least affected by the Washington manoeuvre.” Sir Austen, when shown the statement at Geneva, gave a categorical denial. The British United Press correspondent at Geneva says that Sir Austen Chamberlain did give a confidential statement to correspondents but. fearing that it would be misin-
terpreted. forbade publication. This request was obeyed, except by one American, who got the story second hand.
