SEAMAN FINED
TOO OLD FOR PROBATION THEFT OF CAMERA Held by Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M. to be too old for probation, John McArthur was fined £1 10s in the Police Court this morning, following his conviction on a charge of theft. McArthur. a seaman aged 34, pleaded guilty through Mr. W. W. King to stealing a camera valued at £ 1 from Harold Schmidt at Paremoremo. Other articles were said to be missing from the same place, but Chief-Detective Hammond admitted that it had been impossible to trace them. McArthur was a seaman and had come from England in one of Sanford’s trawlers some months ago. He stole the camera from a house near where he was living and pawned it for five shillings. Mr. King called the Court's attention to accused’s previous good record. He was sending home money to his daughter and now had a chance to get away on a boat. The chief-detective mentioned that McArthur had been living for some time at the Salvation Army Workmen's Home.
