MAJESTIC
“A DAUGHTER OF AUCKLAND”
This evening at tho Majestic Theatre Auckland is to witness a new kind of picture, a Community Comedy Burlesque, in “A Daughter of Auckland,” entirely enacted by Aucklanders and starring New Zealand’s Clara Bow, Miss Hildred Graham.
The story concerns “Mr. McWowse,” who is sent by the “Southland SoulSaving Society” to reform the sinful city of Auckland. Mr. McWowse, however, finds Auckland “vices” very attractive, and it is not long before he resigns his mission, he himself having been “reformed” by the Auckland flappers. Mr. Edward Armitage plays the role of Mr. McWowse, while Miss Graham reveals talent as the modern young daughter of Auckland. The two principals are supported by Mr. Jack Read, well-known local acrobatic comedian, and Mr. Arthur Lord. The titles are the work of local University students. Youth also comes to the Majestic in tho person of David Rollins and Nancy Drexel in the second feature, a comedy-drama, “Prep and Pep.” This unusual story of prep school days was written especially for Fox Films, and the greater part of the picture was filmed at Culver Military Academy in Indiana. The theme of the picture revolves around Cyril Reade (David Rollins), the son of Culvert’s most famous athlete, Tiger Reade. but Cyril comes to school the polished son who has travelled in foreign countries and who knows nothing whatever of athletics. The school expects great things of Cyril and especially the school star, Flash W r ells (John Darrow), who makes it a point to enter Cyril in all the contests. Unknowingly Cyril meets one inglorious defeat after another and, broken-hearted, lie plans to run away. He is stopped in this by the commandant and his daughter Dorothy (Nancy Drexel), who has fallen in love with the bashful boy. From then on the action is fast and furious, vividly depicting a boy’s fight to win honour and prido for liimself and for the school. The climax of the picture comes when a prairie fire threatens the town and Cyril races \.rough the flames and saves Dorothy, who is lost in the inferno. The usual high standard of supporting pictures will be presented and the whole accompanied by Mr. Whiteford Waugh’s Majestic Orchestra. Additions are still being made to the cast of "The Charlatan,” the Broadway stage play which went into production at Universal City last December. Monte Montague is the latest player signed for this production, which has a notable cast, including Holmes Herbert, Margaret Livingston, Roekliffe Fellows, Philo McCullough, Anita Garvin, Bud Marshall, Rose Taplcy, John George and Wilson Benge. George Melford is the director.
