UNPROFITABLE RAFFLE
NET LOSS OF 28S LABOURER PAYS COSTS A private raffle out of which he made only two shillings profit cost John Edward Murdoch 30s at the Police Court this morning. The man, who was described as a labourer with a large family, was also said to have lost his position over the lottery. Alurdoch was summoned to appear at the Police Court, where he pleaded guilty to committing a breach of the Gaming Act at Te Fapupa on February 11.
“A minor affair,” was how ChiefDetective Hammond described the offence. Alurdoch had been working at a fertiliser company at Te Papapa and had conceived the idea of making a little extra money by raffling some cheap tobacco. He had bought 50s worth of tobacco and cigarettes and sold 56 shilling tickets, making six shillings profit. Murdoch: I made only two shillings. Four of the 56 did not pay up. Air. Hammond said that he understood Alurdoch to have a large family. He was an Onehunga man and had lost his position over the raffle. "We were led to make inquiries by hearing that quantities of tobacco were being distributed,” concluded the chiefdetective. "We thought it might have come from somewhere that it should not have done.” Alurdoch explained that when the raffle scheme was first mooted it did not seem popular, but he thought he might as well take it on. "I thought I would be the mug,” he concluded. Murdoch was ordered to pay costs 30s, and was given a week to pay.
