UNPROFITABLE LODGER
MAGISTRATE FROWNS ON ‘PECCADILLOES” TO GAOL FOR FORTNIGHT Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., does not view with favour the operations of Hector James MacDonald, who was charged with theft at the Police Court this morning. MacDonald’s system was to go from boarding house to boarding hoiisv, staying only one night and decamping in the morning with whatever was most easily taken away. "They tire particularly mean thefts.” commented the magistrate. MacDonald pleaded guilty to stealing a gold watch valued at £3, and blankets valued at £2 10s. In a stat€.‘nient MacDonald explained that he stole and pawned the things he took to pay his fare out to jobs in the country. Mr. R. A. Singer urged that there was nothing criminal in the man. It was his first appearance in » % art and necessity had driven him to what counsel described as peccadilloes.” Mr. Singer pointed out that his client had already spent two weeks in gaol. The magistrate decided that a further 14 days would do the man no harm, and sentence was passed accordingly. MacDonald was '-onvicted and discharged on a chairge of failing to comply with a maintenance order made against him at Christchurch for the support of his wife. It was said that the arrears amounted to over £3O.
