WOMEN OF AVONDALE
MEETING OF CLUB The Avondale Women’s Club held its first meeting for the year in Blockhouse Bay Picture Hall, on Tuesday. The president, Mrs. J. W. Kealy, occupied the chair. An interesting report of the meeting of the National Council of Women was read by Miss Newton. Mrs. Gill, a member of the Avondale South School Committee, outlined briefly the difficulties the committee had encountered in securing a bigger playground, on which the carnival fund could be expended to greater advantage than on the present restricted A violin solo, “Souvenir,” played by .Mrs. Armstrong, accompanied by Mrs. H Bollard, received an enthusiastic encore. Mrs. Armstrong responded with “Mazurka.” Mrs. Eileen Riley recited “No,” and, in response to an encore, “Are the Children Home?’’ A thrift competition, for the best article costing not more than Is, arranged by Mrs. Wood, Senior, brought a large number of entries. A vote was taken, the result being as follows: Mrs. D. Wilson, child’s frock, 1; Mrs. H. A. Taylor, tray cloth, 2; Mrs. Oxenham, set of d ovleys, 3. Many of the articles were afterwards sold for the benefit of the club funds. On exhibition was a very beautiful macrame bag, made by Mrs. Gill, who generously offered to instruct members of the club in the art. The president expressed the hope that other members might also volunteer to give exhibitions of hand-craft during the year. To celebrate the opening of the new session afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Annett, Welch, Gill and Oxenham.
