NAPIER FIELDS

INTERESTING CARD PROSPECTS DISCUSSED The autumn meeting of the Napier Park Racing Club will be held at Greenmeadows to-morrow and on Saturday. Fair fields will be seen out in the open events, while the hack contests will be contested by plenty of runners. The course should be in fine order. The following should come in for support in their engagements: Omaranui Hurdles. — Panorama and Diana’s Lad. Maiden Scurry.— Mothplane and Kinross Esk Hack Plandicap.— Sylvan Deil and Bernera. ’ Sapling Stakes.— My Own and Admiral Drake. Napier Cup.—White Fang and Blimp. Autumn Handicap.— Tresham and Merry Mint, Flying Handicap. Kaihoro and Ridgemount, Redcliffe Hack. — Grand Acre and Shrewd. The acceptances are as follow:

WAIKATO NOTES CONTINGENT FOR PUKEKOHE THEIR PROSPECTS DISCUSSED (S,pedal to THE SUN) HAMILTON, Wednesday. The tr acks in South Auckland have been norarly as hard as concrete during the lasL week or two, writes The Sun’s travel! ing Turf correspondent, and nothir ig short of a heavy downpour will bring, them into a condition more satisfactr jry to owners and trainers. Several horses, notably the crack two-ye<Ur-old, Supremacy, have had to be ea' sed in their work, but at the time o / 2 writing light rain was falling and i ndications point to a slight alleviation of the position. A big team of South Auckland horses are making the trip to Pukekohe for the meeting there on Saturday and it will occasion no surprise if they return with a fair share of the prize money. Several more have had a campaign mapped out for them at Wellington and Manawatu, and with Pegaway, Paganelli and other good performers included in the contingent, the Waikato should certainly be to the fore during the next fortnight. May Win Again

The Huntly-trained mare Maurea, who won a similar event at the Rotorua meeting, figures among the acceptances for the Higli-weight Handicap at Pukekohe. She is only fair, but must be given a chance in the company which she meets on Saturday. Another Huntly-trained gelding in Hakanoa is tackling open company at Pukekohe, but he can scarcely be brilliant enough for the job. He has not been beginning too well of late, but should be a possibility worth keeping in mind later on when the company is a little weaker. The Mountain Knight mare, Berinthia, who was very speedy over short distances on the fiat, and who was later put to hurdling, a department of the game in which she was successful at Stratford during the New Year, is one that must be given a great chance with 9.10 in the High-weight Handicap at Pukekohe on Saturday. The local candidate was third and fourth respectively in her two starts over hurdles at Te Aroha and is in good order | to tackle her engagements at the j Franklin meeting. She is inclined to be of a very flighty disposition, but with racing over the sticks has evidently become more solid than formerly. The Te Rapa owner-trainer H. Barr has evidently given up the idea of winning an open six with Regent, for the old Marble Arch gelding figures among the acceptors for the Higliweight at Pukekohe. He has been over, the distance to secure one or two’ minor placings in country cups at nontotalisator meetings, but although the company he meets on Saturday is not as select as that in which he has been racing of late, he can only be recommended as a possibility. A rather promising three-year-old in Te Taone is in the six-furlong hack at Pukekohe with only 7.3 and should certainly beat more than will beat him. The Archiestown gelding, who is a member of A. Cook’s team at Te Awamutu, won very nicely at Matamata and gives the impression that he is likely to go further in the game.

Barrier Shy

After his successes at Matamata and Te Aroha, the Cambridge-trained galloper, Prince Lu, must be taken seriously into consideration for the principal short distance event at Pukekohe on Saturday. He is by no means, how .eyer* a well-behaved gelding and his

habits at the barrier are inclined to make the public wary of him. Should he get away—and his recent performances indicate that he is improving in this regard—he will take a-lot of catching. Since winning at Pukekohe last year the Lord Quex mare, Liaison, has been somewhat disappointing. The Te Awamutu sprinter is not too reliable, but has a lot of pace and if she draws a good marble at Pukekohe on Saturday should take some catching with the minimum in the seven-furlong event. The Te Awamutu-trained mare. Some Lady, is a distinct possibility for the six-furlong hack event at Pukekohe. She has run some fair races of late, her latest being a creditable second to Envoy, to whom she was conceding 131 b. at Te Aroha. Star Comet has been doing well since the Te Aroha meeting, where be registered two very satisfactory performances. The chestnut gelding is a good stayer and with 8.3 in the nine-furlong hack event should be fairly handy at the finish.

A Waikato hack nominated for Wellington that might run well at the meeting is the Valkyrian gelding, Valuation, a member of Tinker’s team at Te Rapa. Valuation, who surprised even his connections by winning a division race at Thames, later made quite a respectable showing from an outside position in a big field at Te Aroha.
