Cashier Wins All The Way in Cup

THE RAIDER ALSO SCORES FIRST DAY AT RANGITIKEI (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON X., Wednesday. Overcast weather, a muggy heat and a damp day were the ruling conditions at Bulls this afternoon. Enough rain had fallen to take a little of the sting out of the track and that assisted some of the horses to victory, notably Novar, who was lucky in more ways than one. The machine showed a slight decline, putting through £13,626 against £13,849 last year.

Ohakea Hurdles

The defection of Gun Area made the Oliakea Hurdles a one-dividend event, in which Airtight (£ 434) was installed a firm favourite, there being a sharp drop to Novar (£226) and Hymestrason (£209). Over the early portion of the race Ban juke and Rangiutu filled the role of pacemakers from the favourite and Hymestrason, with Novar cringing up the rear. However, going into the back the leading pair, who had been jumping badly, retired, Airtight takingcommand from Hymestrason, with Novar close up, and the trio raced past the half-mile post at short intervals. The favourite appeared to have the race at his mercy turning into the straight, but he ran wide at the final fence, enabling Hymestrason to get up on the inside, while Novar joined issue on the outside. A great race ensued to the judge’s box, the trio crossing the line with little between them. A furlong away came Ban juke, with Rangiutu at another interval.

Trial Plate

Fourteen of the original 19 acceptors went to the post in the Trial Plate, in which Skyrider (£365), Lady Lucerne (£270), and Pegeen Oge (£221) were the only candidates at all heavily supported. The favourite, from No. 1

position at the barrier, was smartest to begin, and the Awapuni representative led Pegeen Oge, Lady Lucerne, Monoie, Lucretia and Oral along the back. Crossing the top Lady Lucerne went to the front, although there was little change among the leaders, otherwise. Once landed in the straight Skyrider ran up to Lady Lucerne, and was never troubled to win by two lengths from Gratton, who came from the ruck to get up and fill second berth ahead of Lady Lucerne, Lucretia and Goldlike, who crossed in line. Habit was next to finish. The victory of Skyrider gave the Awapuni mentor, J. P. Coyle, his second successive win. Rangitikei Cup

The poor field of six runners was presented in the Cup race, Anolo, Nucleus, Glenstar, Hipo and Briar Root declining their engagements. Star Area (£636) was favourite from the opening of the machine, although there was good support for Moutoa Treasury (£545) and Cashier (£413). From an even dispatch Cashier was the first to break the line and the Paper Money gelding went to the front to lead Imperial Spark, Moutoa Treasury, Star Area and Orazone in that order. Turning into the back Locarno fell when racing in the rear, but his rider, T. Green, was almost immediately up on his feet. Approaching the half-mile post Orazone made a forward move, and Cashier, Imperial Spark and Orazone turned for home in line, Star Area immediately commencing his run. Cashier and Star Area gradually drew clear and in a battle over the last 50yds Cashier hung on to win by half a length from the favourite, with Imperial Spark two lengths back. Then came Orazone, with Moutoa Treasury last.

Ngatiapa Hack Handicap

Bon Acre and Kali were defections from the Ngatiapa Hack Handicap, and Elysianor (£469) and Acred (£459) were installed firm fancies. Volplane, the third elect, carrying half as much investment money. Elysianor and Vaucluse were the leaders into the back from Patearoa, Volplane and Acred, but rounding the top Patearoa and Acred moved up to Vaucluse, while V'nella also improved her position. * leading trio turned for home in line, .»tit Vaucluse immediately retired, leaving Patearoa and Acred to fight out the finish, the former drawing dear to win by a length. Vinella was in third berth a head away, with Volplane next. Scott Memorial Handicap

Despite the defection of Ridgemount. Kaihore and Bonogne, a good field of 11 runners, class being well represented. went to the post in the Scott Memorial Handicap, in which The Raider (£301) was sent out favourite from Cimabue (£262), and Vast Acre (£226). Limited stood on the mark when the tapes lifted. The Raider, from the inside position, being smartest to begin from Cimabue, Dobbin. Vast Acre, Keddar. Calanmore and Nastori. There was little change right to the entrance o Z the straight, where The Raider had charge from Cimabue and Dobbin. The favourite was never seriously troubled to win by a length from Cimabue. who got the verdict from Dobbin by a head, with Iveddar another head away. Whenuanui was fifth, with Limited, who had come with a great turn of speed, ahead of Vast Acre. The success gave J. Barry the honour of riding the winners oi the two principal events. Elysianor, Gasnapper, Disrank and Patrolet were withdrawn from the Pukenui Hack Handicap, leaving four runners to contest the event. Thrift (£584) was installed a very warm favourite, there being fair money for Balloon (£290). The field was sent away in line, Thrift being, however, in the van from Royal Black and Ivilburn. As they went into the back stretch Royal Black hit the front and five furlongs from home was two lengths clear of Thrift, with Balloon bringing up the rear. The favourite and Kilburn closed on Royal Black crossing the top. but Balloon was at their quarters at the straight enI trance. Thrift went to the front with Balloon in hot pursuit, and the favourite appeared to be somewhat lucky to be granted a dead-heat. Balloon producing the stronger finishing efforts. Ivilbum was third, two lengths back, with Royal Black whipper-in. Clifton High-weight

High Falutin’ (£583), despite the fact that he had only emerged from the novice ranks at Wanganui, was installed favourite for the Clifton High-weight, Maui (£416) and Gold Cure (£410) being next in demand. However, the favourite had to submit to defeat; for following upon an indifferent jump out, he just failed to gather Gold Cure up before the post was reached. After the field had set- ] tied down Some Red and Lucy Rose were showing the way to Royal Damon, I Gold Cure, Vigilance and Maui. As they raced along the back Gold Cure j joined the leaders crossing the top.) and once landed into the straight drew out. He had, however, to be shaker.! up to stall off late challenges fro'm High Falutin’ and Royal Damon, he/ L ds separating the trio at the post. Another stride and the favourite v.ould have secured the honours. Ma q-'i was fourth with Manly, Lucy Vigilance and Some Red next.

Carnarvon Handicap

The big money in the Carnarvon Hack Handicap came for Flying Binge and Lucky Boy, while Luc&y Bag and White Ringlet were by no v leans neglected. Marica. paving 'drawn the rails, was first t* show out, but White Ringlet soon joined in y nd the pair led to the straight, wherp White Ring-
