REQUEST FOR NORTHCOTE BODY TO SEEK RE-ELECTION

SUPPORT OF RATEPAYERS The Northcote Citizens’ Progressive League has every confidence in the present Mayor and council. The following petition was presented to them last evening by Messrs. R. H. Daniels, E. C. Davy, Spargo and E. G. Beaton, on behalf of the League: We, the undersigned, desire to express our appreciation of the highly satisfactory and efficient manner in which the Mayor and council have conducted the business of the Borough of Northcote during their term of office and consider it highly desirable in the interests of the borough that the Mayor and present council offer themselves for re-election en bloc. Mr. Daniels, who acted as spokesman, reminded the council that last election the league had nominated the Mayor and eight members, all of whom had been elected. This year they would again receive the league’s support if they stood. Messrs. Spargo, Davy and Beaton supported Mr. Daniels in his remarks. Cr. E. J. Lennon stated that he had definitely decided not to seek re-elec-tion. He thought the league’s promised support would probably deter other efficient members of the community from coming forward. Cr. E. J. Frazer also supported this view, but appreciated the compliment paid them by the league. Cr. E. J. Weaver asked that the members give an early decision regarding their intentions so that the league could formulate its ticket without delay. He expressed his intention of seeking re-election. Cr. Ellis and Cr. Johnston expressed their appreciation and placed themselves in the hands of the league. Crs. Martin and Ryan stated that they were at present undecided on the matter. The Mayor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, after thanking the deputation on behalf of the council said he was not anxious to continue in office, but he thought, as many important matters were not finalised, he should offer himself for the ratepayers’ approval. The council held a private discussion on the question at the end of their jmeeting, _
