PAST REDEMPTION
CONES IN MT. ROSKILL
GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY URGED “The volcanic cones in this district are so knocked out that they are past redemption,” said Mr. G. E. Tansley at the Mount Roskill Road Board’s meeting last evening, when a recommendation for their preservation from the Auckland Town Planning Committee was under review. “The condition of the Three Kings,” he continued, “is hopeless, but the peak known as the Big King is still in its natural state and it is generally agreed that it should never be mutilated.” It would, he said, shortly be handed oyer to the board, and besides commanding a glorious view, there were still preserved on its slopes rifle pits of the Maori Wars. The chairman, Mr. E. F. Jones, characterised the mutilation of the volcanic hills in the district as pure sacrilege, and he suggested that the Government should be asked to grant a subsidy to the Town Planning Association for their restoration as far as possible and also recommended that the cones be vested in the association with a view to their permanent preservation.
Mr. G. C. Munns, M.P.. said that lie was in communication with Sir George Fowlds and he hoped that steps would shortly be taken to restore and preserve the beauty of these natural assets.
