HONOURS EVEN
RIVAL GIRLS SWIM BRIDSON A CHAMPION Peggy Robertson and Ena Stockley shared honours after two sprint races last evening at the Tepid Baths. Miss Stockley won the women’s 50 yards scratch dash in a time better than the Australian record, and, in beating Miss Stockley for a place against handicap swimmers, Miss Robertson equalled her rival’s New Zealand record for 100 yards of 65 3-5 sec. Both races aroused the 80ft people at the Devonport Club’s carnival to a high pitch of excitement. In the 50yds dash, Miss Stockley had the advantage of Miss Robertson in the take-off, and led all the way. At the end of the first length the Dominion women’s champion led by just over a
yard. Miss Robertson caught up slightly at the turn, but Miss Stockley won decisively by a clear four feet. The time, 2S 2-ssec, was three-fifths of a second better than Fanny Durack’s Australian record. No New Zealand record has been recognised, although Pauline Hoeft, of Auckland, has been credited in a handicap race with a faster time than that made last evening. STROKE FOR STROKE After the rather surprising margin between the two girls in the dash, Miss Stockley was expected by many to beat Miss Robertson in the 300 yards. The older girl again made her start clear-cut, and led the Parnell girl on the first lap. She was two feet ahead at the turn, but Miss Robertson caught up slightly at this stage. Beautifully timed action brought the younger girl nearer the leader on the second lap, and Miss Stockley was only six inches ahead when the last lap was begun. Here there was a stroke-for-stroko battle the whole way. Miss Robertson got ahead of Miss Stockley by a touch, although two girls on handicaps finished ahead. Both swimmers were warmly applauded. Miss Robertson was decisively beaten in the dash, but she took the honours in the longer event, in spite of the fact that Miss Stockley, after her strenuous Southern tour, had not intended to start. Off 2see, Ren de Lorce dashed home from Jack Envvright (Isec) and Bill Farrell (scr) in the men’s 100yds invitation handicap. The time was fair. Gordon Bridson did not have any trouble in winning the half-mile Auckland championship. De Loree swam with him the •whole way, but it was a one-man race. David Lindsay was not able to race. He is out of training at present. By winning the women’s 100yds, Joan Roberts, of Parnell, secured the Fuller Cup. Handicapping in practically every event worked out excellently.
