GOOD SHOOTING

N.Z. MARKSMEN’S SUCCESS CONTESTS IN VICTORIA (United I*.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) MELBOURNE, Tuesday. At the Williamstown rifle .shooting meeting to-day the Edwards match (10 shots at 600yds) was commenced. A heavy cross-wind made it difficult to hold, and necessitated up to 20 degrees of windage. Winners of £1 each were: Mclvor, 47; Hood, 46; Peterson, 45; Boon, 44. Counted out: J. Feest (Swanson), 43. The rest were: Nix, Whiteman, Roots and Orr, 42: Kerr, 41; Bolton, 40; James, 39; Feast, 35. The Argus and Australian and New Zealand aggregate, represented by the first three matches, was brilliantly won by Mclvor, of New Zealand, whose success is exceedingly popular with his team and with the Australians. He scored 142 and won £2O. Others in the prize list are: Soler and .Tames, 137; Paterson and Hood, 136; Simmons, 135; each winning £l. The New Zealanders have won two out of the first four matches. The Australian newspapers describe the result as the New Zealanders’ day. The wind was in the same quarter, but gusty, when the Templeton match (10 shots at 700yds) was fired. Dust made the scoring low. Roots made a fine shoot. He opened with an outer and finished with nine bulls for 47. He won the match and £lO. Others in the prize list were: Keir and Whiteman, 45, £2; Masefield and J. Feast, 44, H. Feast, 33: Piper, 42; Nix and Simmons, 41; all £1 each. At a meeting between Colonel Merrett, Colonel Semmens and Captain Marshall, the following matches were arranged in which the New Zealanders will compete against the Australian States’ teams: A match under Gordon Highland conditions, the Merrett match under Kolspore Cup conditions, a long range match, 3 0 men a-side, 10 shots at 800 and 900 yards.
