PRINCE HELPS MR. WALES
(Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 1.17 a.m. LONDON, Monday. “How the Prince helped Mr. Wales,” is the headline of a story concerning Ernest Wales, from Durham, who together with 100 miners from the distressed districts, is working on a new drainage system in Hyde Park. During his recent tour the Prince of Wales chatted with Ernest, who has had no work for five years. He also saw his wife and three children. Ernest says: “I asked the Prince outright for a job. His secretary took my name to a labour exchange and sent me and 20 others our fares to London. I have thr.ee months’ work here at £2 9s a week. I would still have been on the dole, only for the Prince. A hundred miners sang Welsh hymns as they resumed work at Blaengwnfi mine, which has been reopened after two years. The womenfolk and children, who had suffered great privations, marched with the men, joining in the singing.
