CROQUET RECORD CHAMPIONS FOR NINE YEARS ONEHUNGA CLUB’S SUCCESS A record has just been achieved by the Oneliunga Ladies’ Croquet Club, which has won for the ninth year in succession the Championship of Auckland. Five years ago, when four championship pennants flew each Saturday above the club’s pavilion, it was regarded as a remarkable accomplishment, but as each year si pee has seen an additional symbol of victory regularly hoisted, the question is raised as to whether such a succession of wins does not constitute a world record in the history of outdoor games. One feature of the competition which may in a measure account for the success of the Oneliunga Club is that with one exception the same members of the club have played together for the past nine years. They are: Mesdames A. A. Kenny, W. Wallace, A. Craig, C. J. Schnauer, E. Foster. Alex. Brown, J. E. Cowell, J. B. Crawford and E. Evitt. The competition was inaugurated ten years ago, when the Ponsonby Club scored the first win. At present there are 12 clubs engaged in the championship—Remuera (runner-up for the past two seasons), Mount Hobson, Devonport (two clubs), Epsom, St. Heliers, Ellerslie. United, Mount Albert, Ponsonby and Carlton. But so far, with the exception of Ponsonby, none of them has been able to lower the colours of the redoubtable Oneliunga team. This year the association has decided to present a shield for future championships, and as it will record all past winners, the evidence of Onehunga's outstanding achievement will not be lost.
