RESCUE FROM DROWNING

GIRL BATHER IN DANGER (Special to THE SEX) OPOTIKI, Monday. A plucky rescue of a girl from drowning in the Otara River was effected by Mr. J. Quirk to-day. Mr. W. Carr u tliers, when playing bowls, heard screaming in the river, out thinking some gins were only playing, lie took no notice. When the cries continued, Mr. Carruthers went to the river and saw a girl. Miss Lynch, in difficulties. 11c jumped in, fully clad, but found the current too strong with his clothes on, and had to return to the bank. Mr. J. Quirk, however, who had taken off some clothing, went in and reached the drowning girl. With assistance from Mr. Carruthers and others lie got the girl ashore. She was in a serious condition, but later recovered-
