NEW REGENT
“EXCESS BAGGAGE” The point of view of vaudeville actors and the struggle as it affects their living and life itself is particularly stressed in "Excess Baggage,” now at the New Regent Theatre. The acting, both on and off the stage, of the principal characters, William Haines and Josephine Dunn, is of a high standard. When first the wife, in her husband’s vaudeville career, and then the husband, in his wife’s even more successful screen one, consider themselves to be dependent on the other, they decide to work independently. Haines, as the husband, finds it impossible to complete his sensational slide from the dome of the theatre to the stage without the moral support given by his wife, and the finale of the picture sees both content to work together for their joint success. A story of Austria, woven around the famous “Blue Danube Waltz,” is “Honour Above All,” the second picture, which stars Leatrice Joy and Nils Asther. The story tells of the love of a young nobleman for a peasant girl. The baron is called away to the Great War on the eve of his wedding, and from being a prisoner of war in Siberia returns to find that the scheming of liis uncle has made the girl the wife of a cripple. The final scenes in which the two lovers learn the perfidy of the others allows Miss Joy opportunity for the display of her undoubted talents. Alec Regan, the well-known English comedian and singer, gives his inimitable act, and the music is provided by Mr. Maurice Guttridge’s orchestra. ‘The Bushranger,” Metro-Gold wynMayer’s latest picture will be the new attraction on Thursday. This Australian story tells of high adventure, of robbery under arms, thrills, romance and love in the Australian bush in the colourful early days. Miss Marion Douglas, of Manly, and Dale Austen (“Miss New Zealand, 1927”) have the two principal feminine roles, which they interpret with muchdiscussed skill. YE OLDE PIRATE SHIPPE Ye Olde Parit© Shippe, Milford, will hold a big mid-week gala carnival tomorrow evening, when dancing will be enjoyed until a late hour.
