T-r; J I . f eply to the letter from the Main -Board, asking for particulars tlle time spent by the board’s {raffle inspector on the main highways. Inspector Fletcher submitted a c-omprr-hens,ve report. He estimated that 75 per cent, of his time was spent on th« nigtiways. As the result of a uniformed inspector being employed, lie considered tnat motor drivers are using more caution, and it was only by the employment of sufficient numbers of uniformed inspectors on the road that the speed could bed controlled. Prosecutions were being laid under the Motor Regulations in preferece to the local body’s by-laws, as he considered that motorists are more
conversant with the? regulations. He considered that drivers of heavy vehicles were travelling much in excess of the ■speeds allowed, and this encouraged the drivers of lighter vehicles to exceed the speed limit. The fines inflicted were not considered sufficiently heavy to have the desired effect on the of heavy vehicles. He urged the necessity of cooperation between the inspectors from different areas. In conclusion, he considered that the work of patrolling the main highways justified a subsidy from the board. The clerk was instructed to forward the report to the Main Highways Board.
