PAGANELLI’S CHANCE IN framing his handicaps for the big sprint at Trentham, run a month or so ago, Mr. H. Coyle placed Paganelli on top with 9.10, whereas Reremoana (who eventually finished second in this race) was given 9.2. Paganelli did not start there. For the Thompson Handicap, one mile, to be decided at Trentham next Saturday week, Mr. Coyle starts off with Reremoana at 9.7, while he introduces Paganelli at 8.12. Since the race first mentioned, Paganelli has won both the Taranaki Stakes and the Wanganui J.C. Jackson Stakes, at weight-for-age, the former race seeing the brilliant Lord Quex gelding carrying the maximum penalty. During this period Reremoana has been off the active list. Boiled down, the handicapper, comparing his handicaps for the two races referred to, estimates Paganelli to be Blb superior to Reremoana at six furlongs, but the latter is considered a 121 b better horse at a mile. That is the outstanding feature of the weights for the W.R.C. Thompson Handicap, announced yesterday—a difference now of 171 b. It has been the intention of Messrs. Crawford and Roberts, the owners of the Te Rapa representative, to try Paganelli over a middle distance. Here is their chance! It may never come again in a handicap of such importance. Indeed, it really looks too good to be true.
