Nobile is Blamed For Italia Disaster
“FAULTY HANDLING” REPORT OF COMMISSION (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11.45 a.m. ROME, Sunday. The report of the commission which inquired into the tragic disaster to the airship Italia near the North Pole last year has been submitted to Signor Mussolini. It states that the loss of the Italia was due to faulty handling by General Umberto Nobile, tbe composition of the crew, and the use made of it. The conduct of Commandant Mariano and Commandant Zappi in crossing the ice to seek aid was praiseworthy. General Nobile’s acceptance of priority of rescue was unjustifiable, and
was explicable only by bis physical and moral depression, and Captain Lundborg’s urgent invitation. The utmost was done for the discovery, assistance and rescue of the survivors, and also tracing of the airship, which the Italians, with efiicient foreign co-operation, accomplished smartly. The report pays a tribute to the Russian ice-breaker Krassin’s crew, and the late Captain Roald Amundsen’s generous sacrifice. He gave his life in going to lend aid.
