OVER HUNDRED BOATS RACE AT NORTHCOTE
COMBINED REGATTA BUSY SCENE ON HARBOUR i Over 100 craft, yachts, launches and ! outboards competed in the XortheoteI Birkenhead annual regatta on Saturday afternoon. The upper harbour was alive with boats from lirst-class keel yachts to the tiny Tauranga seven-footers. The entries were a record. When the programme was scheduled to start at 2.30 the very light breeze from the south-west prevented many boats from reaching the starting-line and the start of the first race was postponed 15 minutes. Later a good breeze came down and blew steadily until about 4.30. when it again light- ! ened. The flagship was the ketch ! Miro, lent by Mr. C. E. Campbell, i The officials were: Starters, Messrs, j J. F. Fearnley. A. V. Tyer; judges. ! Messrs. G. R. Hutchinson. C. K. Campbell; timekeeper, Mr. W. A. Wilkinsonrecorder, Mr. G. E. Laycock. DETAILS OF RACING A and B Class.—Victory led the wav across at gunfire, with Windward and Mahaki handy. Lady Sterling was 2m l a t®- The boats had to go as far as the white light buoy in Rangitoto Channel. Ladye Wilma, was 12m late. Finishing times were: Windward (12m), 4.06.41; Mahaki (19m), 5.4.37. Victory, Ladye Wilma and Lady Sterling did not finish. Result. —Windward, 1; Mahaki, 2. C and E Classes.—The start was a straggling one. Wairiki was in the best position. Delville, lona, Owhanga, Dolphin, Scout, Loloma, Mahoe and Katie tollowed in that order. The course was the same as that for the A and B division. Finishing times were: Wairiki (scr), 4.55.0; lona (sm), 5.3.25; Delville (sm), 5.8.0: Owhanga (13m), 5.19.25; Scout (sm), 5.25.52; Mahoe (24m), 5.35.45; Loloma (26m), 5.49.21; Queenie did not finish. Result.—Wairiki, 1; lona, 2; Delville, 3. H Class.—The start was a sluggish one. Celox was first across, then came Why Not, Spray, Starlight, Awatere, Starloch. After the start—about 3 p.m.—a good breeze came from the south-west and the boats lay over and made good progress. Finishing times were: Starlight (scr), 5.10.29; Celox (scr), 5.12.49; Starloch (scr), 5.17.0; Spray (sm), 5.24.40; Whv Not (14m), 5.34.0. Result.—Starlight, 1; Celox, 2; Starloch, L and N Class. —A splendid field of the 22 and 20-foot mullet boats got away. Winifred was first, then came Wairere, Marie, Wyoming, Varuna and the rest of the 13 all close together. Finishing times were: Rakoa (scr), 5.25.44; Winifred (sm), 5.27.37; Marie Hm), 5.29.58; Valeria (scr), 5.31.20; Varuna 5.38.9; Loveliglit (6m), 5.42.1; Malua (Sm), 5.43.JL Mowai (6m), 5.47.20; Waima (10m), Result.—Winifred, 1; Rakoa, 2; Marie, 3. M Class.—A keen start was effected in the race for the 18-foot restricted class. Maia was first, then came Matarere, Finishing times were: Manene, 4.47.10; Maratea, 4.47.25; Matarere, 4.49.0; Maia, 4.49.21; Maroro, 4.51.45; Mawhiti, 4.54.25. Result.—Manene, 1; Maratea, 2; Matarere, 3. V and S Classes.—The start was a great sight. No fewer than 18 boats got away. Desdemona was just ahead, then came
Surprise, Ngairo, Scud, Cyclone and tlx« Maratea, Mawhiti, Maroro and Manene. rest all fairly close. Secret returning to cross the line fouled Mystic. Finishing times were: Surprise (2m), 1.50.6: Drone (scr), 4.52.50; Mistral Urn). 4.53.35: N&hni (7m), 4.58.21: Siephre (7m), 4.58.41; Wild "Wave (4jmV 4.59.40; Secret (4Jm)._ 5.0.5; Mystic (sJm>. 5.2.57: Aratu (Sm), 5.3.10: Scud (7m). 5.4.20: Desdemona (s£m). 5.6.1: Belle (Sm). 5.7.1: Xgaire (13Jm). 5.7.30: Cyclone (13ro>. 5.8.18; Waitui (13m). 5.11.31: Sea Sleigh (10m). 5.11.34: Rita (15m). 5.16.41. Result.—Surprise. 1: Mistral. 2. N'amu. 3 T. X V and Z.—All the boats from 14foot downward were dispatched together and no fewer than 22 started in a procession. Mavbelle was the leader, then. ! <ame Manu Shalimar and the rest all | fairly close. The flotilla made a splendid picture as it sped down harbour. ! Result.—Mavbelle. 1: Ramona. 2; Shalij mar. 3. Outboards.—The order of starting was Miss Kohi. Rose Marie and U-Devil. which were despatched according to handicaps. Near the end of the first round Miss Kohi broke down and Rose Marie secured second position. Miss Kohi got going again. U-Devil was third. Round two saw Rose Marie still ahead. U-Devil had taken Miss Kohi’s second place. The leaders were making a keen race and U-Devil got there bv half a length. Result.—U-Devil (scr). 1: Rose Marie (lm ss). 2: Miss Kohi (lm 20s), 3. Second Outboard Race.—The same three starters were sent away according to revised handicaps. Miss Kohi stopped in much the same position as in the first event and Rose Marie passed her. Miss Kohi (2m). could not get going until too late and did not finish. Result.—Rose Marie (lm 20s), 1: UDevil (scr), 2 Local Auxiliaries.—The starters were: Ivereru, Welcome Jack, Mermin, Jovee. and Zoe. Finishing times were: Welcome Jack (3m). 4.13.30: Zoe (3m), 4.14.10: Mermin , (lm). 4.14.58; Kereru (3£m), 4.15.37; Jovee I (105 m). 4.16.51. Result.—Joyce. 1: Welcome Jack, 2; Zoe, 3. Local 18-foot and Under.—There was a field of 10. The order was Foam, Irene. Ola 11., Continuance, Swiftsure, Phoebe. Tootsie, Sea Bubble, Shrimp, Tamure. Finishing times were: Phoebe (6m). 4.23.55; Swiftsure (lm), 4.24.37; Irene (scr), 4.25.20: Continuance (4m), 4.26.36: Foam (9m), 4.26.49: 010 TI (6m). 4.25.44: Sea Bubble (2m), 4.31.50; Tamure (7m). 4.32.10; Tootsie (14m), 4.34.30; Shrimp (12m), 4.39.12. Result.—Foam. 1; Phoebe, 2; Tootsie, 3. Local Launches.—Both entrants, Ethel Rose and Bluebird, pottered about until j gunfire, when they got an even break. Finishing times were: Blue Bird (2m), 4.50.25; Ethel Rose (scr), 4.51.18. Blue Bird wins the Skeates trophy out- j right, having won three consecutive races. Tauranga Seven - Footers.—The starters were Jonquil (scr). Dot (2m), Zev (2m). The little boats got away in that order. Jonquil soon went ahead, but Dot and Zev could make i.o progress and Mr. P. Carter towed Zev out into the wind clear of the flagship, while the young skipper of Dot paddled his boat clear. The comedy was much enjoyed by the onlookers. At the end of the first round Jonquil still led and the other two met with trouble in the tide. Finishing times were: Jonquill (scr). 4.26.50; Dot (2m), 4.27.15; Zev (2m), 4.27.45. Result.—Dot, 1; Zev, 2; Jonquil, 3.
