Nedda Defeats The Unbeaten Parkwood
RACING AT FLEMINGTON ST. ARDENT A WINNER (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) MELBOURNE, Sunday. Tli© Victoria Racing Club’s autumn meeting opened at Flemington yesterday in tine weather, and there was a large attendance, which included a number of New Zealanders. The Governor-General, Lord Somers, was present. The race track was in capital order, and some fast times were recorded. Cobranveil and Announcer had an exciting struggle over the last two furlongs in the contest for supremacy in the Pines Hurdle Race, Conbranveil winning narrowly. T. Butler, the rider of the winner, gained his third success in this race. The time was a course record. Strephon scored a comfortable victory in the St. Leger Stakes, after being among the leaders throughout. His record is five wins and a second in the last seven starts. Strephon is engaged in the Sydney Cup. Black Duchess led all the way in the Essendon Stakes, and won nicely, giving her rider, J. O’Brien, his 19th win this season. The time is a race record. St. A-rdent was at the front throughout in the Newmarket Handicap, goingall the way on the outside rail. Figure, who filled second place, had every chance. Violian, who ran third, finished well. Mollison struck trouble at a stage of the contest, and might possibly have run second, but he had no chance with the winner, whose trainer, H. Cabell, won the Oakleigh Plate with Baringhup in 1927. The winner’s portion of the stake attached to the Newmarket Handicap was £2,579. The time constitutes a. race record. N. Percival, who steered St. Ardent, had the mount on Thracian Belle in the Newmarket Handicap last year. Parkwood tried to lead all the way in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, but the New Zealand filly Nedda, who was lying second to last at the turn, finished with a lightning run, and gained honours in brilliant style. The value of the first prize amounts to £3,295. This was Parkwood’s first defeat in four starts. In the Brunswick Stakes, Red Sea, after lying fourth in the early stages, came through on the rails at the straight and beat the fast-finishing Horoscope. Red Sea, who is trained by E.
