FINE JAVELIN THROW
RECORD BEATEN BY 10FT MANAWATU SPORTS MEETING Press Association PALMERSTON NORTH, Sunday. At the Manawatu Amateur Athletic t'lub’s meeting yesterday S. Lay. of Hawera, threw the javelin 216 ft. s£in., which was 10ft. 6in. longer than the Australasian record. The wind, which had been blowing in gusts across the line of flight, ceased while Lay was throwing, so the effort may be regarded as being accomplished in calm weather. The special challenge race between Miss Norma Wilson, of Gisborne, and Miss Phyllis Stewart, of Wairoa, was not held owing to the former being ill. Her place was taken by Miss Barrow, of Foxton, who defeated the Wairoa runner over 100yds by seven yards. The time was 11 4-ss. , ,J iu , nninß subsequently in another 100yds event off scratch Miss Barrow's time was 11 2-ss, equal to the New Zealand record.
