OVERLAPPING TO BE CHECKED ROUND-TABLE CONFERENCE With the object of having a free discussion on the question of overlapping among organisations engaged in relief work in Auckland, social workeis of the city met in conference in the Hospital Board rooms on Thursday afternoon. The Hospital Board’s Relief Committee was represented by Messrs. George Knight (who presided), W. Wallace, M. J. Savage, M.P., G. D. Chalmers, W. K. Howitt and Mrs. A. E. Kidd. The relieving officer, Mr. Herbert Jones, was also present. Other social workers at the conference were Major Annie Gordon. Sisters Hannah and Esther. Miss Wallace, Mrs. Jones (of the Benevolent Society) and the Rev. Jasper Calder, the Rev. C. W. Chandler and the Rev. Father Holbrook. The meeting sent a telegrajn to the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, pointing out that unemployment was causing much distress in Auckland. Much extra relief had to be given because of the unprecedented amount of unemployment for this season of the The speakers stressed the point that as far as possible absolute secrety vas lceut in regard to the names of those seeking help, and that the .professional beggar soon became known.
